Karim Rashid
Karim Rashid was born on Sept 18 1960. He was born in Cairo but was brought up in Canada. He is an industrial designer who graduated from Carleton University, Ottawa. He then flew to Italy and completed his post graduation there. By this time, he has undertaken projects related to various fields like fashion, furniture, interiors, and even arts. One of his greatest works is the Morimoto restaurant in Philadelphia. His works are in a lot of museums all around the world including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. He worked for about 10 years as a professor in Industrial Design. Currently he works as a guest lecturer in various famous universities out there.
According to him, a good design is that which should not be limited just to the rich people out there, but it should be one that could be bought by the majority. It should also be appealing to everyone. Georg Jensen, Umbra, Issey Miyake, Alessi and Kenzo are some of the major brands for whom he had worked in the past. For Umbra, he had done a project “Oh Chair” – which was praised by people all over the world including the New York Times. It was a great success, which made him very popular during those times.
As mentioned above, Rashid is good at everything related to designing. If there is something that could be designed – then he will surely give a shot to it. He even designed album covers. And it was in 2006, when he first did such a work. That great art work was for the CD “The ObliqSound Remixes Vol 2″. Not just that, he even created a cool plastic bag for that CD. This way the sales of the CD grew more than what they expected. In short, Karim Rashid is a talented designer who loves designing whatever that is possible to be designed!
