Poul Kjærholm

Poul Kjrholm (Jan 8 1929 – Apr 18 1980) was a talent designer from Denmark. He started doing design related works as an apprentice in 1948, with Gronbech. In 1952, he joined the School of Commercial Art in Copenhagen to gain theoretical as well as practical knowledge in the field of designing.

During the 1950′s he had produced some stunning furniture working for one of his entrepreneur friends Ejvind Kold Christiansen including the PKO plywood series. He had given him lots of freedom to utilize his design skills the way he wanted. He also had some unique and distinctive skills in designing and those were evident from his work.

In 1958, he got the legendary “Lunning Award’” in Paris for his PK22. Not just that, he was the person who was awarded the grand prize at the Milan Trennal in the years 1957 and 1960. In 1959, he joined the Royal Danish Academy of Art in Copenhagen as a lecturer.

During his early years, E. Kold Christensen used to produce his furniture in Hellerup. He was his friend and it really helped him to concentrate more on the design works. His works can be found in most of the famous museums out there including the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Poul Kjrholm died in the year 1980. He was unfortunate to see his designs being used by a large manufacturing firm in Denmark which was just 2 years after his death. Fritz Hansen is the firm and it used to manufacture large collection of the product. These were produced by his friend Christensen.

It was in 2004, Kjrholm Productions took birth because of his son. He established this firm so as to produce his father’s furniture. He knew those works were of great value and needed to be preserved and shown to the public.
